This chapter shall be known and cited as the "Wood Stove Installation
Standards Law of the Town of Rush."
The standards set forth herein shall apply to any installation of a
woodburning stove in any structure in the Town of Rush.
Woodburning stoves shall be installed pursuant to the following standards:
A.
They shall be mounted on a noncombustible surface masonry,
stone or metal), with a fire-stop material (gypsum or asbestos millboard)
between the mounting surface and a combustible floor. The noncombustible mounting
surface shall extend a minimum of 12 inches beyond each side and back edge
of the stove and 18 inches from the front where the wood is loaded.
B.
The minimum horizontal distance from the stove to any
unprotected surface (wall, ceiling or furniture) shall be 36 inches. The minimum
horizontal distance may be reduced when a noncombustible sheet (metal or asbestos
millboard) is mounted on noncombustible spacers to the surface of a combustible
wall. The minimum horizontal distance for such installations shall be determined
by the Building Inspector.
Stove pipes for woodburning stoves shall meet and be installed pursuant
to the following standards:
A.
The size of the stove pipe shall be no smaller than the
size of the stove connection.
B.
The stove pipe shall be installed with the smallest possible
number of elbows and pipe sections. All joints shall be fastened together
with at least three sheet metal screws or rivets.
C.
The stove pipe from stove to thimble shall be a minimum
of 18 inches away from any combustible surface.
D.
Stove pipes shall be a minimum thickness of 24 gauge.
Chimneys for woodburning stoves shall meet and be installed pursuant
to the following standards:
A.
Metal chimneys shall be designated and labeled by the
manufacturer as UL Class A all-fuel. They shall have a minimum flue size of
eight inches. They shall be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions,
shall be supported at the base, shall have standoff brackets if mounted on
the outside wall, and fire-stopping at each floor, if mounted on the inside
of the structure.
B.
Masonry chimneys shall be constructed of cement block
or brick. They shall have a clay tile flue liner with a minimum size of eight
inches. The foundation footer for a chimney structure shall be a minimum of
eight inches thick, be two times the area of the chimney cross section and
located a minimum of 42 inches below grade.
C.
The top of any chimney shall be a least two feet above
the highest point of the roof and at least 10 feet from any adjacent structures.
D.
A cleanout shall be installed at the base of any chimney.
All connections of stove pipes to chimneys shall meet and be installed
pursuant to the following standards:
A.
Connection to metal chimney shall be by a fabricated
pipe section labeled by the manufacturer "for use with all fuels." Said pipe
section to be completed through wall or roof according to manufacturer's instructions.
B.
Connection to masonry chimney shall be by a thimble cemented
and extended through flue tile into chimney flue. Entry point of the thimble
into a living area shall be a minimum of 18 inches from any adjacent wall
or ceiling surface. Thimble entry through a combustible wall shall be fire-stopped
with a noncombustible material (gypsum or asbestos millboard) at a point no
closer than 16 inches to any surface of the thimble.
Plans for any installation of a woodburning stove shall be approved
in advance by the Code Enforcement Officer and the installation shall be inspected
and approved by the Code Enforcement Officer before use.
