This chapter is enacted under the authority of § 59.26(8), Wis. Stats.
The number of Deputy Sheriffs, or other employees, of the Sheriff's Department of Grant County shall be fixed from time to time by a majority vote of the members voting at a duly constituted meeting of the County Board. The number of Deputy Sheriffs shall not be less than the number which may from time to time be required by § 59.26(1)(a) and (b), Wis. Stats.
The persons appointed shall hold the office of Deputy Sheriff, or other employee position, on good behavior.
There is hereby created a grievance committee, to be titled the "Employee Relations Committee," which shall have the power, authority and the duty described for grievance committees in § 59.26(8)(b), Wis. Stats.
Any Deputy Sheriff or other employee acting as a Deputy Sheriff or other employee at the time of the adoption of this chapter shall be eligible to continue such appointment without the examination or selection required by this chapter.
The Sheriff and the Employee Relations Committee may from time to time adopt rules further defining the term "good behavior," in addition to all generally accepted requirements of police employee duty.
The County Board, by a majority vote of members present and voting at any proper meeting of the County Board, may lay off such number of Deputy Sheriffs or other employees of the Sheriff's Department, and may designate that such layoffs shall occur within such classification of Deputy Sheriffs or other employees, as it chooses, by such vote.
