[Adopted 8-11-2011 by Ord. No. 2011-14]
Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40:48-1, the Mayor may charge for and collect fees for performing marriage and civil union ceremonies, provided the municipality adopts an ordinance fixing those fees.
The New Jersey State Registrar has directed municipalities to establish a fee schedule pursuant to the fees allowed by state regulation.
Ocean Township utilizes the services of a part-time elected official as its Mayor, and the fees for performing such ceremonies pursuant to regulation shall be as follows:
All fees must be made payable to the Township of Ocean, deposited into the current fund and then disbursed to the Mayor through the appropriate budget line item for reimbursement of said fee and any out-of-pocket expenses. Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses or disbursements to Mayor for performance of said marriage ceremony or civil union ceremonies shall be provided by voucher. The Mayor is not required to charge a fee; however, if a fee is paid, it must be in the manner and amount set forth above.
This article is hereby established for the performance of marriage and civil union ceremonies by the Office of Mayor, Township of Ocean. The performance of a marriage or civil union ceremony is not an obligation of the office of the Mayor, but should be viewed as an accommodation.
