All dogs in violation of this Part 1 may be taken by the Animal
Control Officer and impounded in the animal shelter and there confined
in a humane manner or, in lieu of impoundment, the Animal Control
Officer may cite the owner for violations of this Part 1.
Unlicensed impounded dogs shall be kept for not less than five
days and licensed dogs shall be kept for not less than seven days,
unless reclaimed by their owners.
Upon proof of ownership and proof of a valid rabies vaccination,
a person may reclaim an unlicensed impounded dog within five days
from date of impoundment or a licensed dog within seven days and shall
pay fees set by resolution of the Fiscal Court.
Any unlicensed dog not reclaimed by its owner within five days
or any licensed dog not reclaimed by its owner within seven days shall
become the property of the County Humane Society and shall be eligible
for adoption or humane euthanasia; provided, however, that the owner
may reclaim his dog after the passage of the waiting period, if available,
by paying the pickup fees and boarding fees. In such event, the owner
shall not be responsible for any adoption fee.
The Animal Control Officer shall take diligent efforts to locate
the owner of all dogs impounded under this Part 1 and shall immediately
notify owners of licensed dogs by mailing a notification to them at
the address listed on the license.
