The
Borough is served by a volunteer fire company whose members frequently
are called upon to risk their lives to protect the safety and property
of the residents of the Borough.
The
services of the members of the volunteer fire company are donated
to the public without compensation and with no cost to the residents
of the Borough.
Chapter
168, Laws of 1957 of the State of New Jersey, as amended and supplemented,[1] authorizes municipalities to provide for the payment of
pensions to the widows/widowers and minor children of volunteer firefighters
killed in the performance of their duty as a result of injuries sustained
therefrom.
Pension
authorized. The widow/widower or minor child or children of any volunteer
firefighter who dies as the result of injuries sustained in the course
of the performance of duty as a member of a volunteer fire company
regularly serving the residents of the Borough shall be paid a pension.
Amount
of pension established. Pensions shall be $5,000 per annum, to be
appropriated annually in the Borough budget and paid in the same manner
as Borough employees are paid.
Terms of
pensions. The pension shall be paid to the widow/widower during her/his
widowhood or to the minor child or children of such firefighter if
(s)he leaves no widow/widower surviving, or to his/her minor child
or children after the death of the widow/widower.
