[HISTORY: Adopted by the Town Board of the Town of Shelter Island: Art. I, 10-8-1976 by L.L. No. 2-1976. Amendments noted where applicable.]
[Adopted 10-8-1976 by L.L. No. 2-1976]
The Town of Shelter Island is unique, completely surrounded by water and located between the North and South Forks of Long Island, Suffolk County, New York, having an economy heavily dependent upon seasonal tourist trade, producing great fluctuations in the size of population throughout the year. It is the intent of this legislation to exercise the powers conferred by the New York Municipal Home Rule Law § 10, Subdivision 1d, and to supersede the New York Town Law § 158, Subdivision 2, insofar as it limits the number and hours of special policemen employed by the Town of Shelter Island.
The Shelter Island Town Board may employ special policemen in accordance with the New York Town Law § 158, Subdivision 2, but in a number up to 10 and without restriction as to hours and days of employment.
