§ 36-1 Creation of Commission.

A Cultural and Heritage Commission is hereby created pursuant to the authority granted to the city pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40:48-2, N.J.S.A. 40:69A-40 et seq. and in furtherance of the authority granted pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40:10A-1 et seq.

§ 36-2 Powers and duties.

A. 

The Commission created hereunder shall advise the Mayor and the Local Historian concerning matters of cultural and historical significance to the City of Camden.

B. 

The Commission may render assistance to the Local Historian, prepare reports and recommendations concerning historical and cultural matters and participate in the planning of celebrations involving historical or cultural themes.

§ 36-3 Composition of Commission.

The Commission shall be composed of 13 members who shall be appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of City Council. To the extent possible, membership of the Commission shall be composed of representatives of the various cultures of the residents of the City of Camden. Eleven members shall be residents of the City of Camden. The remaining two members may be residents of the County of Camden who have an interest in and appreciation of the history and culture of the City of Camden.

§ 36-4 Term of membership.

Members of the Commission shall serve for a term of five years, except that when the initial membership is established three persons shall be appointed for a one-year term; three persons for a two-year term; three persons for a three-year term; two persons for a four-year term; and two persons for a five-year term. One of the persons nominated for a five-year term shall also be designated as the Chairperson upon submission by the Mayor of the nomination to City Council. One of the persons nominated to serve a four-year term shall also be designated to serve as Vice-Chairperson upon submission by the Mayor of his nomination to City Council.
