There shall be and there is hereby established
the position of Commissioner of Public Safety.
The Commissioner of Public Safety shall be a
member of the Board of Trustees and shall be appointed by the Mayor
with the approval of the Board of Trustees at its annual meeting for
such term as it shall determine by resolution.
A.
The Commissioner of Public Safety shall act as a liaison
between the Village of Port Jefferson and law enforcement agencies
and departments, including but not limited to the Suffolk County Police
Department.
B.
He (or she) shall make recommendations to the Board
of Trustees regarding law enforcement and shall assist the Board of
Trustees in its interaction with law enforcement agencies.
C.
He shall also be responsible for coordinating the
activities of the Village Code Enforcement Bureau and Constabulary.

This article shall supersede all applicable
provisions of the Village Law of the State of New York and particularly
§ 3-308 thereof to the extent that it conflicts with or
is contrary to the provisions of this article.

A Public Safety Advisory Council is hereby established
which shall consist of nine members.
A.
All members of said Council shall be appointed by
the Board of Trustees for terms of three years and shall serve at
the pleasure of the Village Board of Trustees.
B.
Vacancies on the Council shall be filled in the same
manner as the original appointment, except that a vacancy occurring
other than by the expiration of the term of office shall be filled
only for the remainder of the unexpired term.
C.
The first three members shall be appointed for three
years; the second two members shall be appointed for two years; and
the last four members shall be appointed for one year.
D.
The successors of all nine initial appointees shall
be appointed for full terms of three years.
The Public Safety Advisory Council shall select
from its own membership a Chairman, Vice Chairman and Recording Secretary.
The Council shall meet at least once each month, and meetings shall
be at the call of the Chairman or upon the request of four members
of the Council or upon the request of the Mayor.
The Council shall:
A.
Study and review the operation of Village ordinances
and the administration thereof involving public safety and welfare.
B.
Advise the Village Board of Trustees on changes, modifications
and improvements to the Village Code to foster improved public safety
and welfare.
C.
Act as an advisory body to all other Village boards
and commissions in connection with safety and public welfare and may
request input from the various Village boards and commissions.
