A. 
All borough employees shall meet the residency requirements as established under this article except for elected officials, professionals and their employees and positions created by state law.
B. 
The Borough of Fort Lee hereby establishes residency preference classes for the hiring of employees, which classes are set forth below in order of their preference:

Class I - Residents of Fort Lee
Class II - Residents of the County of Bergen
Class III - Residents of New Jersey contiguous to County of Bergen
Class IV - Residents of New Jersey
Class V - Citizens of the United States
C. 
All borough positions governed by this article shall be filled first from the pool of qualified Class I applicants before Class II applicants will be considered.
D. 
An applicant's residency shall be determined as of the date of his application for employment with the borough.
E. 
The submission by any employee of erroneous information concerning one's true residency shall be cause for removal.
Nothing in this article shall prevent the Borough of Fort Lee from adopting an amendment to this article or establishing a policy requiring police officers and other personnel whose jobs require them to respond to an emergency to reside within a reasonable time after appointment within 15 miles of the Borough of Fort Lee in order to facilitate a prompt response to any such emergency.
