Editor's Note: This chapter was originally adopted 7-28-1993 by Ordinance No. 93-15. It received Department of Transportation approval July 14, 1994, as Chapter 215 of the 1993 Code, which chapter codified the following ordinances or parts of ordinance: 85-2, 85-6, 85-10, 85-11, 85-15, 85-29, 86-2, 86-5, 86-8, 86-22, 87-1, 87-11, 87-13, 87-16, 87-26, 87-28, 88-8, 88-39, 89-3, 89-37, 91-3, 91-14, 91-15, 91-20, 91-28, 92-05, 92-08, 92-11, 92-23, 93-13, 93-17, 93-28. Chapter 215 was renumbered to Chapter 226 with the recodification of the Township ordinances in 2002. No changes were made to the text of the chapter except for inclusion of ordinances duly adopted by the Township amending this chapter.
Whenever any words and phrases are used in this chapter, the meanings respectively ascribed to them in Subtitle I of Title 39 of the New Jersey Statutes Annotated shall be deemed to apply to such words and phrases used herein.

Unless another penalty is expressly provided by statute or this Code or chapter, every person convicted of a violation of a provision of this chapter shall be liable to a penalty of not less than $20 or more than $1,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 90 days, or both, in the discretion of the court.

A. 
The Chief of Police of the Township of Manalapan and/or the Township Engineer of the Township of Manalapan be and is hereby authorized to provide by regulation for the closing of any street or portion thereof to motor vehicle traffic on any day or days during specified hours or on any day or days whenever he finds that such closing is necessary for the preservation of public safety, health and welfare.
B. 
Any regulation promulgated by the Chief of Police or Township Engineer under and in accordance with Subsection A above shall provide for the posting of proper warning signs of such closing of any street or portion thereof during the time the same is closed in pursuance thereof.
C. 
Any violation of this section or of any regulation promulgated thereunder shall be punished by a fine not to exceed $50.
D. 
Any regulation adopted under this section shall not become effective unless and until it has been submitted to and approved by the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation if the closing is for more than 48 continuous hours.
