Whenever any words and phrases are used in this article, the meaning respectively ascribed to them in Subtitle 1 of Title 39 of New Jersey Statutes Annotated shall be deemed to apply to such words and phrases.
Either the Police Department or Department of Public Works of this municipality is hereby authorized to remove any vehicle from any public street or highway to the nearest garage or other place of safety or to a parking area maintained by the municipality under the circumstances hereinafter enumerated.
If a member of either the Police Department or Public Works Department, under any of the circumstances referred to in § 226-45 hereof, is able to ascertain the name and address of the owner of said vehicle, such representative of the Police Department or Department of Public Works shall immediately give notice, in writing, by certified mail, return receipt requested, to such owner of the removal of the vehicle from the public street or public highway and the reason or reasons therefor, as well as the place to which the vehicle has been removed.
The owner shall pay the reasonable costs of the removal and storage which may result from such removal before regaining possession of the vehicle.
