There is hereby established a Volunteer Fire
Department of the Borough of Haledon, to be known as the "Haledon
Volunteer Fire Department" and hereinafter interchangeably referred
to as the "Fire Department" and "Department."
Said Department shall be divided into two companies,
to be known and designated as "Fire Co. No. 1" and "Fire Co. No. 2,"
respectively.
As used in this chapter, the following terms
shall have the meanings indicated:

To become eligible for membership in the Fire
Department or any unit thereof, the person desiring to become a member
shall have the following qualifications:
A.
He/she shall be a citizen of the United States and
shall live within a five-mile driving distance of the boundaries of
the Borough of Haledon. This provision shall apply to all members,
including officers.

B.
He/she shall be a member in good standing of either
of the two corporate bodies now known as "Haledon Fire Company No.
1 of the Borough of Haledon, County of Passaic, State of New Jersey"
or "Haledon Fire Company No. 2 of the Borough of Haledon, County of
Passaic, State of New Jersey.
C.
He/she shall have attained 18 years of age.
D.
He/she shall be a person of good moral character and
shall not have been convicted of a crime.
E.
He/she shall submit with his or her application for
membership a certificate from the designated Borough physician for
the initial physical exam and for the annual medical evaluation as
to his/her physical fitness and ability to perform the duties of a
volunteer fire fighter. The physical requirements of the applicant
shall meet the requirements of the New Jersey State Firemen's Association.
F.
All applicants
for membership shall submit an application and consent form for fingerprinting
and a background search by the Haledon Police Department, the results
of which must meet with the satisfaction of the Haledon Fire Department
and the Borough of Haledon governing body prior to confirmation of
appointment.

A.
Said applicant shall be recommended for membership
in the Department by the fire company with which his or her application
has been filed. Upon approval by the Mayor and Council, the applicant
shall sign the Borough roll and be admitted into membership of the
Haledon Volunteer Fire Department as a probationary member for a period
of six months from the time he or she signs the roll. During said
probationary period, the applicant shall perform all duties required
of members of the Fire Department, among which shall be the duty of
attending fires, drills and other departmental functions. During said
probationary period, the applicant shall be entitled to all privileges
and benefits of membership in the Department. After serving said probationary
period to the satisfaction of the senior officer of the company where
the application was filed, the Chief of the Department shall so be
informed, and he in turn shall then submit to the Borough Council
a written certification that said applicant has completed the required
probationary period in a satisfactory manner, and upon approval by
said Council, the applicant shall become a regular member of the Haledon
Volunteer Fire Department and shall, at the time of said approval,
have a badge of membership issued by the Chief. If not so certified
and approved after the six-month period, the senior officer of the
company may grant an extension of three months for said applicant;
then, if the applicant is not certified and approved, said applicant
shall not become a member of the Haledon Volunteer Fire Department.
B.
Within the first 18 months of entering the active
roll, any member who does not have the course Fire Fighter I must
enroll within 18 months.

Whenever any member of the Haledon Volunteer Fire Department shall be charged with any of the offenses mentioned in § 23-24 of Article VI hereof or, if for any reason, he or she shall cease to be an active fire fighter, then and in that event the badge issued to such member shall forthwith be surrendered to the Chief of the Fire Department.[1]
