Before starting work, the contractor shall obtain all necessary permits
for excavating or storing material on a public or private way and any other
permits or bonds required.
A.Â
All operations shall be conducted so that interference
with the flow of traffic will be held to a minimum. Temporary bridging across
trenches shall be constructed when necessary for traffic and pedestrians.
B.Â
All necessary precautions to prevent injury to the public
due to open trenches shall be taken. Protective fences and barricades shall
be erected, and adequate warning lights at all trenches, excavated material,
equipment or any other obstacle which may in any way be source of potential
danger to the public shall be provided.
C.Â
All costs for police protection in connection with maintaining
traffic while work is in progress shall be provided and paid.
D.Â
The contractor shall remain fully responsible for the
protection of persons and property at all times.

A.Â
Existing pavement shall be cut prior to excavation. The
width of the cut shall extend beyond the edge of trench at least 3 feet on
each side.
B.Â
After bedding the pipe, the trench shall be backfilled
with Controlled Density Fill as specified previously (see § 248-19B(19),
trench backfill).
C.Â
The Controlled Density Fill shall be placed up to the
bottom course of existing pavement.
D.Â
Steel plates shall be placed over the trench and excavated
pavement and shall extend at least 2 feet beyond the edge of the pavement
cut.
All materials for use in trenches shall be approved by the Superintendent
of Streets prior to placement.
A.Â
Temporary pavement shall consist of Class I bituminous
concrete pavement Type I-1, 1Â 1/2 inches thick, in accordance with the
most recent edition of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Standard Specifications
for Highways and Bridges, Boston, MA.
B.Â
The contractor shall maintain the pavement surface. If
points of settlement or holes appear in the temporary pavement, the contractor
shall repair the same within 3 days of notification by the Superintendent
of Streets.

A.Â
Permanent pavement shall be Type I bituminous concrete
placed in binder and finish courses matching the existing pavement courses
and rolled with a ten-ton roller.
B.Â
Prior to placing the pavement courses the edges of cut
pavement shall be painted with hot asphalt.
C.Â
After completing the paving, the area shall be mechanically
cleaned and swept of all surplus material and debris to the satisfaction of
the Superintendent of Streets.
D.Â
Compaction with a ten-ton roller shall be done, as directed
by the Superintendent of Streets.
