In accordance with the provisions of § 12-169a
of the General Statutes, a local scholarship fund to provide financial
assistance for postsecondary education for residents of the Town of
Canton is hereby established.
The Canton Dollars-for-Scholars Committee or
other committee selected by the Board of Selectmen is hereby designated
as the local scholarship committee established to select, annually,
scholarship recipients.
A.
The Tax Collector is authorized to redesign and designate
a place on the motor vehicle property tax bills for taxpayers to check
off amounts to donate to the local scholarship fund. The redesign
must be approved by the State Office of Policy and Management prior
to its use. Information regarding the scholarship fund and the donation
provision shall be included with the bill that is mailed to the taxpayer.
B.
The donated amount shall not reduce the tax liability
but shall be in addition to the amount otherwise due and payable.
C.
The Town Finance Officer/Treasurer shall deposit all
moneys collected as a result of the checkoff to the local scholarship
fund. The Finance Officer/Treasurer may accept donations from other
sources for purposes of the fund.
