An Economic Development Commission consisting of five members is created to promote the economic development of the Town and to advise the Selectmen and other agencies of the Town. Membership on the Commission shall consist of electors of the Town. They shall be appointed by the Board of Selectmen, one member to serve until January 1, 1975, one member to serve until January 1, 1976, one member to serve until January 1, 1977, one member to serve until January 1, 1978, and one member to serve until January 1, 1979, or until their successors have been appointed and qualify. Subsequent to the initial appointment, all members shall be appointed to serve for a period of four years. The first meeting of said Commission shall be convened by the First Selectman, at which meeting a Chairman shall be elected by the membership. Thereafter, a Chairman shall be elected by the membership at the first meeting held subsequent to the first day of each year. Said membership may hire clerical help and technical assistance to the extent allowed by any budget appropriated to the Commission in accordance with law.

There shall be two alternate members appointed by the Board of Selectmen for a term expiring January 1, 1978, and appointed thereafter for four-year terms. Said alternate members shall serve in the event of the absence, disability, or disqualification of any regular member. The Chairman of the Commission shall call upon one or both of said alternate members with no requirement of alternating between the two.

The Canton Economic Development Commission shall have all the powers and duties given to a municipal economic development commission by § 7-136 of the General Statutes.

The Canton Economic Commission is hereby designated as the Canton Economic Development Agency with all the powers granted by Chapter 132 of the General Statutes to a town development agency.
