[HISTORY: Adopted by the City Council of the City of Englewood 10-5-1978 by Ord. No. 2335 as §§ 9-20 to 9-23 of the 1978 Revised General Ordinances. Amendments noted where applicable.]
The following system of numbering all buildings and lots of land, as heretofore adopted, is hereby continued:
A.
All numbers on streets running east and west are to start with the east or west line of the right-of-way of the Northern Railroad Company of New Jersey or its successor, and all numbers on streets running north and south are to start at the north or south line of Palisade Avenue, as the case may be.
B.
Streets which do not intersect either the railroad or Palisade Avenue are to be numbered as though they did so intersect.
C.
Streets crossing the railroad shall receive the designation "East" for that part lying east of the railroad and "West" for that part lying west of the railroad. Streets crossing Palisade Avenue shall receive the designation "North" for that part lying north of Palisade Avenue and "South" for that part lying south of Palisade Avenue.
D.
Odd numbers shall be assigned to the north and east sides of a street and even numbers to the south and west sides.
E.
The unit distance per number is hereby established at 25 feet for lot frontage. Buildings occupying less than 25 feet of lot frontage shall use half numbers.
The owner of every building shall at his own expense number his building in accordance with the provisions of this chapter with its proper number by placing on said building in a conspicuous place near the entrance thereof numbers corresponding with the numbers provided for herein and set forth on the map hereinafter referred to. The dimensions of said numbers shall be not less than two inches. The numbers shall be plainly visible at a distance of not less than 50 feet. The owner of each building hereafter constructed shall forthwith number his building in the same manner.
The map entitled "City of Englewood, New Jersey, Map Showing House Numbering, October 1922," on file in the office of the City Engineer and heretofore adopted as the numbering map of the City, is hereby continued as the numbering map of the City, and the numbers set forth and laid down thereon are hereby established for the lots and houses thereon indicated. When any new street is laid out, the City Engineer shall lay down, designate and plot the new street on the aforesaid map and shall provide numbers on the property fronting on the said street in accordance with the provisions of this chapter. Such numbers when laid down on said map shall be regarded as the proper and legal numbers for the property and the building thereon.
Any person who shall violate any provision of this chapter shall, upon conviction thereof, be punished by a fine not exceeding $500 or by imprisonment for a term not exceeding 90 days, or both. A separate offense shall be deemed committed on each day during or on which a violation occurs or continues.
