There is hereby created within the Township of Cranberry, Butler County, Pennsylvania, a Department of Public Safety which shall consist of the Cranberry Township Police Department, and shall be responsible for the coordination of services rendered by the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company, the Emergency Management Agency Coordinator, and the Cranberry Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc.

The Board of Supervisors may appoint a Director of Public Safety who shall be considered the chief administrative officer of the Department of Public Safety. The Director of Public Safety shall report directly to the Township Manager.

The Director of Public Safety shall have all powers and duties assigned to him/her by the Township Manager and the Board of Supervisors, provided that nothing contained herein shall affect the current status of the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company and the Cranberry Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc., as independent, volunteer entities.

The Board of Supervisors may require that the Director of Public Safety obtain or have certification under 53 Pa.C.S.A. § 2161 et seq., and if such certification is required, the Board of Supervisors may, by resolution, designate the Director of Public Safety as a member of the Cranberry Township Police Force.
