A fire department is hereby created for the Borough of Hellertown, to be composed of the Dewey Fire Company No. 1 and any other fire company or companies that may hereafter be organized in the Borough and admitted to the Fire Department by amendment of this chapter.
The chief executive officer of the Fire Department, to be known as the "Fire Chief," shall be elected triennially by the active members of the Fire Company but shall not assume office until his election shall have been confirmed and approved by the Borough Council. His term of office, however, shall commence as of the date of his election by the active members of the Fire Company.
Subordinate to the Fire Chief shall be the Assistant Fire Chief, elected in accordance with the Fire Company Bylaws by the active members of the Fire Company, with his election subject to approval or confirmation by the Borough Council. The Assistant Fire Chief shall be second in command of the Fire Department and shall take over the duties of the Fire Chief in case of the absence thereof or in case of vacancy in the office, pending the election of a successor.
Vacancies in the office of Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief shall be filled for the unexpired portion of the original term by vote of the active members of the Fire Company, subject to approval or confirmation of Borough Council.
