Every driver of a vehicle approaching a stop sign, located on Town of Smithfield or Smithfield School Department property, which sign is positioned to control the flow of traffic onto any local highway, state highway, street or roadway, as those terms are defined by G.L. § 31-1-23, shall stop before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection. In the event there is no crosswalk, the driver shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but if none, then at the point nearest the intersecting highway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic on the intersecting highway before entering the intersection, except when directed to proceed by a police officer or traffic control signal. Violators of this article are subject to the fines enumerated in G.L. § 31-41.1-4.
