A.
The County Legislature finds and determines that, in order to maintain
an equitable basis for compensating elected County officers, a permanent
schedule should be established for certain elective officers provided
in the Suffolk County Charter. The County Legislature also finds and
determines that the State of New York has provided a schedule, including
the compensation of the District Attorney of Suffolk County, at equitable
levels on a statewide basis superseding local legislation on that
subject.

A.
The salary of all elected officers specified in Subsection B holding positions under the Suffolk County Charter shall be increased annually commencing January 1, 2001, by an amount equal to the lesser of 4% or the amount of increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the New York - Northern New Jersey - Long Island Region published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the United States Department of Labor for the preceding year, subject to the provisions of Subsection C of this section.
B.
Salaries for the following officers shall be subject to the maximum annual adjustment set forth in Subsection A:

C.
The automatic salary increases for elected officers authorized by Subsection A shall be suspended for the four-year periods set forth below. The salary of the County's elected officers may only be increased during the periods set forth below by a duly enacted resolution of the County of Suffolk.

This article shall not take effect until at least 45 days after adoption, nor until approved by the affirmative vote of a majority of the qualified electors of the County of Suffolk voting on a proposition for its approval if, within 45 days after its adoption, there is filed with the Clerk of the County Legislature a petition protesting against such law in conformity with the provisions of § 24, Subdivision 2h, of the Municipal Home Rule Law, and upon filing in the office of the Secretary of State.
