Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40A:14-156, the Chief of Police or other head of the City's Municipal Police Department or the Mayor or Chief Executive Officer of this municipality is hereby authorized to request assistance from the Chief or other head of any other Police Department or force to which this article shall apply, during or after an emergency within this municipality's territorial limits which requires additional police assistance in order to protect life and property or to assist in suppressing a riot or disorder.
The Police Chief or other head of this City's Municipal Police Department or force is hereby authorized to provide assistance to other municipalities to which this article shall apply, when a valid request for such assistance is made by such other municipalities and to supply such personnel and equipment as requested to the extent possible without endangering person or property within this municipality.
Upon providing assistance to another municipality, this municipality shall assume the cost and expense of providing its personnel and equipment to the requesting municipality, except in such instance when and where the requesting municipality receives state or federal aid by way of reimbursement for such cost. In such circumstances, the costs incurred by this municipality by virtue of providing such assistance shall be submitted to the municipality or community requesting assistance.
The members of the Police Department or police force of this municipality who suffer injury, or their legal representative, should death result, while rendering assistance to another municipality pursuant to this article shall be entitled to all benefits they would realize if injury or death had occurred in the performance of duty in this municipality.
Any member of a Police Department or force from another municipality who is rendering assistance to this municipality pursuant to this article shall have all the powers, authority and immunities members of the Police Department or force of this municipality would have in the course of performing their duties.
The actions and deployment of members of another Police Department or force rendering assistance to this municipality pursuant to this article shall, at all times during the rendering of such assistance, be directed by the Police Chief of this municipality.
This Article shall apply to any municipality outside the territorial jurisdiction of this municipality which shall have adopted an ordinance substantially containing the terms and conditions set forth in this article and thereby creating a reciprocal relationship with this municipality with regard to matters addressed by this article.
