Borough of Spotswood, NJ Chapter 59 Buildings, Numbering of

§ 59-1 Establishment of uniform system.

The Borough Council of the Borough of Spotswood has been advised by the Chief of Police that many homes in the Borough are not numbered, have street numbers blocked or are so small they cannot be read and are, therefore, creating law enforcement problems in identifying houses or building numbers. Therefore, there is hereby established a uniform system of house numbering in the Borough with the following regulations to be applied to all home and building numbering.

§ 59-2 Placement of number signs.

All building number signs and auxiliary building number signs shall be mounted on the building itself, except where such number is deemed to be more visible if posted at the curbside adjacent to the building entrance. The Borough reserves the right to require posting of number signs at both curbside and on the building where it is determined necessary in the best interest of public safety. Numbers may be placed on curbside mailboxes, provided they appear on both sides of the mailbox.

§ 59-3 Size of numbers.

The numbering on buildings must be approximately four inches in height and clearly visible from the street. Numbers on mailboxes must be approximately two inches in height.

§ 59-4 Color contrast required.

Each number shall be painted in a color in contrast with the color of the surrounding surface.

§ 59-5 Additional numbering.

The numbering may be on house doors and screen doors, provided that they also appear on another part of the building in a conspicuous fashion.
