A.
The Director of Public Works, under supervision of the Police Chief,
is hereby authorized and, as to those signs and signals required hereunder,
it shall be his duty to place and maintain or cause to be placed and
maintained all official traffic signs, signals, markings, and safety
zones. All signs, signals, markings, and safety zones shall conform
to the standards as prescribed by the Department of Transportation,
Highway Division, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

B.
Sections 600-4 and 600-5 of Article II and §§ 600-24, 600-28, 600-29A and 600-32 to 600-36 of Article VI, relating to parking, and §§ 600-56 and 600-57 of Article VIII, relating to turning movements, shall be effective only during such times as a sufficient number of official signs are erected and maintained in each block designating the provisions of such sections.
C.
Section 600-42 relating to one-way streets shall be effective only during such times as a sufficient number of official signs are erected at each of the exits of each one-way street, so that at least one sign will be clearly visible for a distance of at least 75 feet to the drivers approaching the exit.
A.
No person or corporation shall place, maintain, or display upon or
in view of any street any unofficial device, sign, signal, or curb
or street marking which purports to be or is an imitation of or resembles
an official traffic device, sign, signal, or curb or street marking
or which attempts to direct the movement of traffic or which hides
from view any official sign, signal, marking or device.
B.
The Chief of Police is hereby empowered to remove every such prohibited
sign, signal, marking or device or cause it to be removed without
notice, and he shall receive the cooperation of the Department of
Public Works of the City of Gardner in the performance of this duty.

Any person who willfully defaces, injures, moves, obstructs
or interferes with any official traffic sign, signal, device or marking
shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding $20 for each and every
offense.
The City Council shall have the power to designate the location of all bus stops, taxicab stands and service zones within the City, and in the case of taxicab stands the Chief of Police shall designate who shall use them. Nothing contained in Article V shall be construed as prohibiting the City Council from designating the location of and making provisions for bus stops, taxicab stands and service zones on any street or part thereof which has been or may hereafter be designated as a parking meter zone. It shall have the power to designate the location of all parking meter zones, parking meters and parking meter spaces within the City.
The operator of any vehicle shall obey the instructions of any
official traffic control signal, sign, device, marking or legend unless
otherwise directed by a police officer.
