This chapter shall be referred to as "Flags."
The purpose of the provisions of this chapter is to recognize the passing of law enforcement officers, firefighters and ambulance/rescue squad members, emergency medical technicians and paramedics who either work or volunteer for such services in the City of Camden or reside in the City of Camden and provide such services, so as to honor same, as well as the passing of service or honorably discharged military veterans who engaged in a combat theater, as approved by the United States Department of Defense, who either worked for the City of Camden at the time of their passing or resided in the City of Camden at the time of their passing so as to honor same.
A. 
The City Council, upon timely notification and verification of the death of a federal, state or local law enforcement officer, firefighter, ambulance/rescue squad member, emergency medical technician or paramedic who either works or volunteers in the municipality providing such services or is a resident of the City of Camden who dies in the line of duty or during the time of active service, or a military veteran who engaged in a combat theater, as approved by the United States Department of Defense, who either works for the City of Camden or resides in the City of Camden, shall direct that the United States Flag, the New Jersey State Flag and the City Flag be flown at half-staff at all municipal buildings for a period of three days from the date of notification and verification. Said notification shall be made at the time of death, but in no event later than one week after internment.
B. 
Such timely notification and verification shall be provided by the family of the deceased, indicating their desire to have the flag flown at half-staff.
C. 
In flying the flags at half-staff, the flags should be first raised to their respective peaks and then lowered to half-staff position.
Council shall forward a commemoration of the honor of the flying of the flags at half-staff to the immediate family of the deceased.
