Village of Spring Lake, MI Article V Offenses Against Public Safety

§ 240-21 Playing games in roadway prohibited.

No person while on a public roadway or any area open to public vehicular traffic shall engage in roller skating or skateboarding, or shall participate in the playing of any game of football, basketball, baseball, stickball, kickball, volleyball, tag or any other similar activity or game.

§ 240-22 Discharge of weapons.

A. Generally. No person shall discharge any firearm, airgun, spring gun, crossbow, slingshot or any other dangerous weapon, nor engage in any hunting activity except as provided in this section.

B. Shooting ranges. It shall not be a violation of this section for target shooters to discharge firearms at a shooting range approved by the Village Council and the Chief of Police.

C. Police officers. It shall not be a violation of this section for police officers to discharge firearms in the legal exercise of their duties.

D. Defense. It shall not be a violation of this section for persons to discharge firearms lawfully acting in the defense of person or property.

E. Killing injured animals, rodents. It shall not be a violation of this section for persons over 21 years of age, after having obtained the permission of the Village Manager or Chief of Police, to discharge firearms for the purposes of killing sick or injured animals or noxious or destructive rodents.

F. Discharge of firearms while hunting. It shall not be a violation of this section for individuals to discharge a firearm when engaged in the activity of hunting, as long as said activity is in conformity with regulations approved by the State Department of Natural Resources, is permitted by the provisions of this article, and as long as such activity occurs within a specific area of the Village between School Street on the west and Lloyd's Bayou on the east, southward to the boundary of the Village on the south and bounded on the north by a line 200 feet south of the most southerly public streets in the Village (the "designated area").

G. Hunting. Hunting shall only occur within the designated area set forth in Subsection F above; shall only be lawful during the small game and waterfowl seasons; and shall only be permitted if in conformity with the regulations prescribed by the State Department of Natural Resources.

§ 240-23 Use of BB guns by minors.

No person under 17 years of age shall use or possess any handgun or rifle designed and manufactured exclusively for propelling BBs not exceeding 0.177 caliber by means of a spring, gas or air outside the curtilage of the individual's domicile unless such person is accompanied by a person over 17 years of age.

§ 240-24 Abandoning of airtight containers.

No person shall leave outside of any building or dwelling, or in a place accessible to children, any abandoned, unattended or discarded icebox, refrigerator, trunk, chest, cooler, cabinet, or any other container of any kind which has an airtight door or lock which may not be released for opening from the inside without first removing the locks or doors from the container.
