The purpose of this chapter is to promote the public health, safety and welfare of the Village of Huntington Bay, including the protection and preservation of the property of the Village and its inhabitants, by establishment of a procedure whereby the efficient and prudent administration of the municipal affairs is promoted through the establishment and fixing of annual compensation for elected officials of the Village of Huntington Bay.
It is the finding of the Board of Trustees of the Village of Huntington Bay that the executive, legislative, policy and fiduciary responsibilities associated with the positions of Mayor and trustee have increased significantly over the past several years as the operations of the Village of Huntington Bay have become more complex. In order to fulfill their duties, the Mayor and the members of the Board of Trustees find that they each must now dedicate a greater amount of time on a daily basis to a variety of matters that are necessary for the Village to function properly and efficiently. Accordingly, the Board of Trustees finds that it is in the best interests of the Village and its residents that persons serving in the positions of mayor and trustee shall be entitled to annual compensation in the amounts set forth herein.
A.
Compensation amounts. The annual compensation for the following elected officials shall be fixed at the following sums to be paid in equal monthly installments during his or her term of office:
Position
Compensation
Mayor:
$18,000
Trustee-Police Commissioner:
$4,800
Trustee-Road Commissioner:
$4,800
Trustee:
$2,400
B.
Limitations. The annual compensation amounts set forth above shall be the maximum amounts paid to an elected official. A trustee may not simultaneously serve as both the Police Commissioner and the Road Commissioner, and the Mayor may not serve as either the Police Commissioner or the Road Commissioner.
C.
Restriction on benefits. Elected officials shall not receive any other compensation or employee benefits from the Village other than those that are mandated by law.
The adoption of this chapter is subject to a permissive referendum pursuant to Article 9 of the Village Law.[1]
