GENERAL REFERENCES

There is hereby established a Local Veterans' Advisory Committee which shall have the responsibility of carrying out locally the duties and purposes of this section and, within their charter powers and as otherwise provided by law, may make available to such local committees the necessary funds to carry out their duties and responsibilities. The Committee may:
A. 
Act as the coordinating agency in all matters concerning veterans and their dependents, coordinating the activities of public and private facilities concerned with veterans' reemployment, education, rehabilitation and adjustment to peacetime living;
B. 
Cooperate with all national, state and local governmental and private agencies in securing services and benefits to which a veteran or his dependents may be entitled;
C. 
Use the services and facilities of the veterans organizations so far as possible to carry out the purposes of this section; and
D. 
Encourage and coordinate vocational training services for veterans.
The Local Veterans' Advisory Committee shall be comprised of five regular members and two alternate members. Each member shall either reside in the City of West Haven or have his or her regular place of business or employment in the City. The members shall be appointed by the Mayor of the City of West Haven.
A. 
Regular members of the Veterans' Local Advisory committee first appointed shall be designated to serve for one, two, three, four and five years, respectively, and thereafter shall be appointed annually to serve for five years. Any vacancy shall be filled in the same manner as the original appointment.
B. 
Alternate members of the Committee first appointed shall be designated to serve for one and two years, respectively, and thereafter shall be appointed to serve for five years. Said alternate members shall serve on the Committee in the absence of a regular member, and when doing so, shall act with the full power and authority of a regular member. Any vacancy shall be filled in the same manner as the original appointment.
C. 
Said Committee shall select from its members a Chairman and a Secretary, who shall serve for one year.
D. 
All members of said Committee shall serve without compensation.
