Detectives will be responsible for making criminal investigations by gathering, assembling, preserving and reporting facts and evidence.
Detectives shall interview accused persons, witnesses and others, evaluating their testimony.
They shall assist in court cases by testifying and presenting evidence.
They shall investigate missing persons or wanted persons.

They shall investigate all felonies and certain assigned misdemeanors, larcenies over $1,000 and all fatalities.
Detectives shall keep their commanding officer informed of all matters coming to their attention regarding any aspect of the Police Department.
Under no circumstances shall they make public any information that might jeopardize the successful completion of the investigation or apprehension of the perpetrator.
Detectives shall give diligent, efficient and prompt attention to the investigation of crimes or complaints assigned to them and utilize all agencies at hand and available elsewhere for the clearance of crimes by the arrest of the offender and the recovery of stolen property.
Detectives shall conform strictly to the rules and regulations and operating procedures of the Department.
When a case has been assigned to a Detective, the Detective shall interview the complaining witness without delay and properly identify himself/herself.
Detectives shall hand in written reports prescribed by their commanding officer.
Detectives shall keep their supervisor informed of the progress of their investigations.
It shall be the duty of the Detectives to render assistance to other members of the Department when requested, but shall not interfere with or work independently upon any case.
Detectives shall work the hours set down by their commanding officer in charge of the Detective Division.
All Detectives shall be dressed as follows:
A. 
Business suit.
B. 
Sport coat, slacks and tie.
C. 
Exception: on special assignment.
Detectives shall instruct subordinates at in-service training classes and give talks to schools and organizations on police activities.
Detectives shall maintain surveillance over known agitators, suspected narcotic peddlers and over suspected criminals.
Detectives shall investigate all crimes of gambling and lotteries.
Detectives shall return prisoners from other cities and jurisdictions.
