[Adopted 4-9-1986 by Ord.
No. 123]
The Borough of Roosevelt has been listed on the National Register
of Historic Places by the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service
of the United States Department of the Interior; and
The official national designation of the entire Borough as a
historic site was awarded on the following interrelated areas:
Politics/Government
Social/Humanitarian
Art
Architecture
Community Planning
The community has expressed its strong continuing interest in
maintaining the greenbelt concept which, in the words of the successful
application for designation as a historic site, allows Roosevelt to
"claim Garden City idea, espoused by Ebenezer Howard of England."
The pioneering importance of Roosevelt's greenbelt design
to community design in New Jersey has been acknowledged in the 1972
publication of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs entitled
"Another Way: Clustering, Planned Unit Development, New Communities."
It is important to acknowledge and maintain the status accorded
the Borough of Roosevelt by the State and national governments by
enacting a local historic district ordinance.
