The governing body of the City of Ocean City determines that the public safety and welfare of the citizens of the City of Ocean City would be best served by mutual cooperation in event of emergency between its police and fire departments and those of other municipalities.

The Chief of Police of the City of Ocean City is hereby authorized to request assistance from the Police Chief of the Police Department of any other municipality within Cape May County or Atlantic County to provide aid during and after any police emergency, provided that such other municipality has enacted an ordinance which is reciprocal to the within section. The Fire Chief of the City of Ocean City is hereby authorized to request assistance from the Fire Chief of any other municipality within Cape May County or Atlantic County to provide aid during or after any fire emergency, provided that such other municipality has enacted an ordinance which is reciprocal to the within ordinance.

The Chief of Police of the City of Ocean City and/or the Fire Chief of the City of Ocean City shall provide the assistance which is so requested, provided such other municipality has enacted a reciprocal ordinance to the within section, to any other municipality or municipalities in Cape May County or Atlantic County, making a valid request to supply such personnel and equipment as required to the extent possible without endangering person or property within the City of Ocean City. The members of the Police Department of the City of Ocean City and/or members of the Ocean City Fire Department supplying such aid, shall have the same powers, authority, rights and immunities of the members of the Police Department and/or Fire Department of the municipality to which assistance is rendered.

Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146.10, a special law enforcement officer under the supervision and direction of a full time Chief of Police is hereby authorized to perform his duties in any other municipality in Cape May County which has enacted a reciprocal ordinance to provide mutual police aid and/or mutual fire aid in case of emergency.

The City of Ocean City shall, upon providing police assistance and/or fire assistance to such other municipality which has enacted a reciprocal ordinance to the within ordinance, assume the cost and expense of providing its personnel and equipment to the requesting municipality, except in such instances when the requesting municipality shall receive State or Federal aid by way of reimbursement. In the case that the requesting municipality shall receive State or Federal aid, the cost incurred in supplying such aid to such other municipality shall be submitted, by Voucher, to the municipality to which such assistance was rendered.

Members of the Police Department of the City of Ocean City and/or members of the Fire Department of the City of Ocean City suffering injury, or their legal representatives if death results while rendering assistance in another municipality, shall be entitled to all of the benefits which they would have realized if their injury or death had occurred in the performance of normal duties rendered within the City of Ocean City.
