Permission to depress curb for all driveways must be obtained from the
Department of Public Works.
Residential driveways or driveways for individual or private garages,
etc., where curbs must be depressed, shall not exceed 10 feet in overall width.
Other driveways crossing curbs and sidewalks and requiring depressed
sections of curb shall meet the following requirements:
A.
Maximum overall length: 30 feet.
B.
Minimum distance to street, alley or public way intersection:
five feet as measured from a point on the curbline which is located at right
angles from the street line at the point of intersection of the two street
lines.
C.
Minimum distance to property line (adjacent common property
line): eight feet as measured from a point on the curbline which is located
at right angles from the street line at the point of intersection of the street
and side property lines.
D.
Minimum distance from hydrants: 10 feet.
E.
No service or parking on sidewalk will be allowed.
F.
Minimum safety island between drives: 20 feet, preferably
32 feet at curb and not less than 10 feet at property or street line. Parking
will not be prohibited if otherwise allowed.
G.
Minimum acute angle to curbline (considered parallel
to street line): 45º.
H.
A coping (curbing type) of six-inch width and showing
a six-foot face aboveground must be constructed at the rear (along property
to street line) of each safety island throughout its entire length.
I.
White traffic lines of six-inch width shall be painted
from curb to rear of sidewalk, denoting the driveway side limits.
J.
A suitable pole, post or barrier, ornamental or otherwise,
shall be erected behind intersecting street lines so as to effectively prevent
vehicles from passing over sidewalk area at corner or at any other locations
not designed as a driveway.
K.
A plan of the proposed changes in sidewalk, curb and
other features, such as barricade posts, protecting curb, etc., shall be submitted
in sufficient detail for proper consideration by the Department. Such plan
shall be submitted in duplicate at the time the application for permission
is made.
The Department of Public Works has taken no action regarding standards
for private ten-foot driveways.
