In order to minimize adverse impacts of pruning on the Town's trees,
all work performed shall comply with the following requirements and standards.
A.
Trimming shall be done in such a manner as to protect
current tree health with all possible regard for future growth and development
B.
All work will be performed in compliance with ANSI Standard
Z-133 and National Arborist Association (NAA) Pruning Standards.
C.
No major limb or a limb with a diameter greater than
15% of the tree diameter at breast height (dbh) shall be removed unless approved
by the Tree Warden, prior to the commencement of trimming.
D.
Climbing irons shall not be used on any tree.
E.
Unless otherwise authorized by the Tree Warden, it shall
be unlawful as a normal practice for any person or firm to top any Town tree.
Trees severely damaged by storms or other causes, or certain trees under utility
wires or other obstructions where other pruning practices are impractical,
may be exempted from this chapter at the determination of the Tree Warden.
F.
A reasonable attempt shall be made to trim dead wood
from the area being worked.
A.
Trimming for utility line clearance shall protect the viability
and proper shape of a tree, and in no case shall trees be trimmed to provide
clearance to wires and cables in excess of the following standards:
(1)
The maximum clearance standards in Table 1 below, except under
well documented circumstances, for specific trees only, to be approved by
the Tree Warden; and
(2)
In no case shall tree trimming remove more than 15% of the leaf
surface in any one year, unless approved by the Tree Warden; and
(3)
Tree trimming for clearance to wires and cables shall be performed
for no more than three years' growth; and
(4)
In all cases tree trimming shall be reduced wherever possible,
especially on young trees.

Nothing in Article III shall conflict with the safety standards of the National Electrical Code.
