As used in this article, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:
ATTIC FAN
Large, high-volume fans used to withdraw air from an entire building through pressure and/or mechanically activated louvers in the ceiling of the upper part of a building.
CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR
An instrument approved by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., for the detection of the poisonous gas, CO.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER
Portable, ABC fire extinguisher rated for residential use (minimum 2 1/2 pounds) approved by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.

HEAT DETECTOR
An instrument approved by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., for the detection of abnormal rise in temperatures.
SMOKE DETECTOR
An instrument approved by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., for the detection of combustion products.
A. 
Detectors, as described above, may be either electrically powered, battery-powered or a combination of both. Battery-powered units shall contain visible or audible signals denoting failure of equipment.
B. 
Upon activation, the detector shall provide an audible alarm which is to be so distributed and of such character so that it can be heard in all rooms of the building with their doors closed. This audible signal shall be distinctive from audible signaling devices which may be used for other purposes in the building. The detector system shall be designed for and capable of either self-restoration or manual restoration to normal condition after each test or alarm, and shall remain in normal condition for operation. No provisions shall be made for deactivation of the audible alarm other than by reactivation of the detector system.

Smoke, carbon monoxide and heat detectors shall be installed during the construction of all new buildings except detached accessory buildings.

A. 
A minimum of one smoke detector shall be installed on each floor of a residential dwelling.
B. 
A minimum of one fire extinguisher shall be located within 10 feet of a residential kitchen.
C. 
A minimum of one carbon monoxide detector shall be installed within 10 feet of a bedroom.
Smoke and heat detectors shall be installed in any addition to an existing building, provided the addition exceeds 100 square feet.
A. 
The installation, location and number of the units shall be subject to the inspection, recommendation and approval of the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Boonton Fire Department.
B. 
In buildings containing central air conditioners, forced-air heating systems or attic fans, the detectors shall be so connected that activation of the detectors will deactivate the main power supply for the central air conditioner, forced-air heating system or attic fan, in addition to sounding the alarm.
No certificate of occupancy shall be issued by the Building Inspector until the above conditions have been complied with and written approval to such effect is received from the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Any owner or agent and any person who shall violate any of the provisions of this article or fail to comply therewith shall be liable to the penalty stated in Chapter 1, General Provisions, Article III, General Penalty. Every day such violation continues shall be deemed a separate and distinct violation.
