Unless the context otherwise requires, the following definitions shall be used in the interpretation and administration of the chapter. Words used in the present tense include the future; the singular number shall include the plural, and the plural the singular; the word "structure" shall include the words "arranged," "designed," "constructed," "altered," "converted," "rented," "leased" or "intended to be used"; and the word "shall" is mandatory and is not optional.
A. 
As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:
ALTERATION
As applied to a building or structure, a change or rearrangement in the structural parts or in the exit facilities or an enlargement, whether by extending on a side or by increasing in height or moving from one location or position to another. The term "alter" in its various modes and tenses and its participle form refers to the making of an "alteration."
DWELLING UNIT
Any structure used solely for human habitation; that is, either eating, sleeping or living.

PERMIT
A written approval from the Town of Corinth to construct or alter a structure or building.
STRUCTURE
Anything that is constructed or erected on or under the ground or upon another structure or building.
USE
Any activity or purpose that a building, structure, lot or land or part thereof is put to.
(1) 
CONFORMING USEAny activity or purpose which agrees with the regulations set forth in this chapter as permissible.
(2) 
NONCONFORMING USEA "nonconforming use" of land or structure thereon, or both, shall not be considered a violation of this chapter, provided that such use is in existence on the effective date of this chapter.

(3) 
PERMITTED USEAny use of land within the restricted area for which a permit has been granted, whether the same is conforming, nonconforming or an acceptable variance.
