A. 
In accordance with Village Law § 3-301(2), the Board of Trustees of any Village, by resolution or local law subject to permissive referendum, may establish the office of Village Justice.
B. 
The Village Board, upon investigation of the current services provided by the Village, has determined that the establishment of a Village Court to be presided over by an elected Village Justice is in the best interest of the Village.
A. 
The office of Village Justice is established. Said Justice shall serve for a term of office of four years as provided in Village Law § 3-302.
B. 
The Village Board shall appoint a Village Justice to serve until March 31, 2008.
C. 
The office of Village Justice shall elect at the next general election in March, 2008 for the Village of Monroe, at which election the Village Justice shall be elected to a full four-year term to commence April 1, 2008.
This article is subject to permissive referendum in accordance with Village Law § 9-902 and shall not be effective until certification of the results, should a referendum be required by proper petition and upon the filing of same with the New York State Department of State. In the absence of a referendum this article shall take effect 30 days following adoption by the Village Board and upon subsequent posting and filing with the New York State Department of State.[1]
