Commencing on the effective date of this article,
the position of compactor-truck driver shall be established in accordance
with the recommendation of the Department of Civil Service.
The job description and requirements of the
position of compactor-truck driver shall be as follows:
A.Â
Definition. Under direction, the compactor-truck driver
shall drive, clean, service and make minor repairs to a compactor
truck, occasionally may perform manual and unskilled laboring work
in connection with driving the compactor truck and shall do related
work as required.
B.Â
Examples of work. The compactor-truck driver shall
drive a compactor truck on an assigned route, shall operate the hydraulic
lift apparatus used for loading debris onto the truck and the hydraulic
mechanism for compacting debris, shall drive to the dump and dump
refuse in the designated area, shall keep a check on gauges for hydraulic
pumps and other mechanisms, may be required to assist in loading the
compactor truck, shall clean and grease the compactor truck, shall
make minor repairs to the compactor truck and shall keep necessary
records.

Requirements. The compactor-truck driver shall have:

The ability to read, write, speak and understand English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
(2)Â
Six months of experience in the operation and maintenance
of trucks or other maintenance and construction equipment.
(3)Â
Possession of a valid New Jersey license.
(4)Â
Considerable knowledge of the care, maintenance and
competent, safe and efficient operation of compactor trucks, including
the cleaning, lubrication, servicing of batteries and care of tires
and of minor repair procedures, knowledge of the use of air brakes,
of the proper method of double-clutching a transmission when shifting
and knowledge of the hydraulic system that operates the lift and compactor
mechanism.

The ability to analyze problems involving the operation
of large trucks; to understand, remember and carry out oral and written
directions; to learn from explanations and demonstrations; to drive
large trucks in a skilled and safe manner; to check, clean, service
and make minor emergency repairs to trucks; to keep necessary records;
to properly shift a five-speed transmission; to recognize when the
hydraulic system is low and to add the proper amount of oil when needed;
and to properly read controlling gauges to prevent damage to equipment
or injury to personnel.

Good health and freedom from disabling physical and
mental defects which would impair the proper performance of the required
duties or which might endanger the health and safety of oneself or
others.
