[HISTORY: Adopted by the Board of Trustees of the Village of Northport 10-4-1966 by L.L. No. 3-1966 as Ch. 74 of the 1966 Code. Amendments noted where applicable.]

No person shall drive a taxicab, hack, stage or vehicle of any sort within the village for transportation of passengers for hire without first obtaining a license therefor. The license fee for such taxicab or vehicle for hire is as set forth from time to time by resolution in Chapter 147, Fees. Upon the payment of such license fee and upon approval of the applicant by the Village Board, the Village Clerk shall deliver to the applicant a license permitting the operation of such vehicle within the village.

Each applicant for a license to operate such taxicab or other vehicle within the village must comply with the following to the satisfaction of the Village Board:
A. 
Must first have obtained a chauffeur's license.
B. 
Must be of the age of 18 years or over.
C. 
Must be clean in dress and person and not addicted to the use of intoxicating liquor or drugs.
No taxicab or other vehicle while awaiting employment by passengers shall stand on any public street or place other than at or upon a taxicab stand designated or established in accordance with Chapter 282, Vehicles and Traffic. Such spaces shall be marked by the direction of the Board of Trustees as "Taxi." A prospective passenger may select any vehicle he may desire in the stand. No taxicab or other vehicle shall occupy a stand unless a license therefor has been issued.

The Board of Trustees may revoke the license of any person upon conviction of the violation of any ordinance of the village regarding the operation of vehicles or upon conviction of the violation of any of the provisions of the Vehicle and Traffic Law of the State of New York.
The Mayor is hereby authorized to suspend any taxicab license until the next meeting of the Board of Trustees, and in the event of the violation of any of the provisions of this section by such licensee, the Mayor is hereby directed to suspend such license until the next meeting of the Board of Trustees and thereupon the said license may be revoked or suspended by the Board of Trustees in its discretion.
Any person not having duly obtained a license as herein provided or any person whose license has been revoked or suspended who drives for hire a taxicab or other vehicle upon the village streets or any person who violates any other provision of this chapter shall, upon conviction, be punished by a fine not exceeding $250, imprisonment for a term not to exceed 15 days, or both such fine and imprisonment, for each violation.
