The Mayor of the City of Schenectady is authorized, with the approval of the Corporation Counsel, to execute proofs of loss and releases of claims in favor of the City if the payment to the City is for the amount of the claim or if the claim by the City does not exceed $500. A release of a claim in excess of $500 is subject to approval by the City Council if the amount to be paid to the City is less than the amount of the claim.

A. 
The Corporation Counsel is authorized to enter into writing agreements settling claims against the City for amounts not exceeding $500 each. If the Claims Committee of the City Council approves a settlement, the Director of Finance is authorized to pay the agreed amount and to charge the appropriate budget code. The Corporation Counsel shall file with the City Council a monthly written report of claims so settled.
B. 
The Corporation Counsel, with the informal approval of the Claims Committee, is authorized to enter into written agreements settling claims against the City for amounts in excess of $500 each. If the City Council by resolution approves a settlement, the Director of Finance is authorized to pay the agreed amount and to charge the appropriate budget code.
The Mayor, subject to the approval of the Council, shall obtain insurance adequate to protect the City.
