The Borough Engineer may direct test holes to be excavated in advance of setting stakes to determine the location of existing public utilities. The contractor shall be paid for such excavation at the unit price bid for extra excavation.
A.
Trenches for sewers and appurtenances shall be excavated to such depths and widths as will give proper and sufficient room for building the structures they are to contain and for sheeting, pumping, tamping around pipes, or placing any special foundation for the structure.
B.
Trenches shall be opened in accordance with the lines and grades given for the work. Without the written permission of the Borough Engineer, not more than 200 feet of trench shall be opened in advance of the completed sewer. In rock, the completed excavation must be at least 50 feet in advance of the pipe laying.
C.
Tunneling shall not be permitted without the written permission of the Borough Engineer, and then only in accordance with the methods approved by him. Such permission shall be given only where the sewer is to be laid under railroad tracks, or where, in the opinion of the Borough Engineer, it is necessary owing to the proximity of adjacent walls or structures. Tunnels shall be refilled with 1:10 cinder concrete. No extra payment shall be made to the contractor for tunneling or concrete refilling, the cost thereof being deemed included in the unit prices bid per linear foot for the sewer construction.
D.
In rock excavation the rock must be excavated to a point at least four inches below the bottom of the pipe. The excess excavation shall be refilled with foundation stone or with Class D concrete as specified in § A385-52, as may be ordered by the Borough Engineer, in such manner that the lower third of the pipe shall be evenly supported throughout its entire length. Any foundation stone or concrete used for such refilling shall be paid for at the unit price for the same.
E.
The trench bottom shall be recessed in such a manner as to relieve any load on the pipe bell.
F.
No classification is required to be made of the character of the material to be excavated inasmuch as the unit prices bid for the completed sewer and appurtenances includes the cost of excavating all material of any character that may be necessary for the completion of the work.
A.
The sides of all trenches shall be securely held by bracing and sheeting. The lumber used for this purpose shall be free from defects impairing its strength or durability. When, in the opinion of the Borough Engineer, sheeting or bracing cannot be safely removed, it shall be left in place. The contractor shall be paid for lumber so left in place, upon order of the Borough Engineer, at the unit price bid. Lumber left in place shall be cut off two feet below the ground surface. In measuring quantities for payment, the cutoff portion shall not be included. No thickness of sheeting over two inches and no lumber exceeding in size that customarily used shall be paid for unless the use of such larger sizes shall have been ordered in writing by the Borough Engineer.
B.
All sheeting and bracing not left in place by written order of the Borough Engineer shall be furnished, placed, and withdrawn at the cost of the contractor, the cost thereof being deemed included in the unit price bid per linear foot for sewer construction.
The line or grade may be changed by the Borough Engineer without additional compensation over the price bid, unless extra excavation is caused thereby over that indicated on the plans, or unless such change makes it necessary to replace more pavement than would have been required on the original line. In such cases the extra work shall be paid for as follows:
A.
Extra excavation shall be paid for at the unit price bid.
B.
The replacing of extra pavement shall be paid for at the unit price bid, or, if no unit price has been bid, payment shall be made under a supplementary agreement.
A.
If, in the opinion of the Borough Engineer, the material at or below the grade line is of improper nature for a foundation, it shall be removed to such depths and widths and in such manner as he may direct. The extra excavation and materials used for refilling shall be paid for at the respective unit prices bid.
B.
Any excavation below grade not done by order of the Borough Engineer shall be refilled to grade with foundation stone at the cost and expense of the contractor.
The contractor shall furnish a sufficient pumping plant, and he shall provide and maintain drainage in the trench satisfactory to the Borough Engineer. All water from the sewer trench and from any sewer, drain, or watercourse which may be interfered with shall be conveyed to a suitable point of discharge in a manner satisfactory to the Borough Engineer.
A.
Before the usual backfilling is commenced, fine earth shall be tamped around and above the pipe to a depth of one foot over the top of the pipe. Care shall be taken to prevent any disturbance of the pipe or damage to newly made joints. If the remainder of the backfill is dumped from buckets, the contents of the buckets shall be deposited on existing backfill and allowed to slide into the trench. Bracing shall not be removed until the trench below it has been substantially filled, and every precaution shall be taken to prevent any large slips of earth from the side of the trench.
B.
All backfilling must be properly consolidated by tamping, or, if the character of the soil is suitable, it may be consolidated with water.
C.
If sufficient suitable material for refilling is not available from the excavation, the contractor shall furnish such material as may be required from other sources. The cost of such material supplied from outside the limits of the work shall be paid for under a supplementary agreement.
D.
The surface of the ground shall be left in as good condition as it was previous to the commencement of the work.
A.
As the work progresses, all rubbish and refuse, surplus dirt, and all unused material, tools, and equipment shall be removed.
B.
The contractor may be required to haul surplus dirt to any designated point without extra charge, provided the haul does not exceed one mile. If no such requirement is made, all surplus material shall be the property of the contractor and shall be removed and disposed of at his cost and expense.
When, for any reason, the work is left unfinished, all trenches and excavations shall be filled up and the roadways and sidewalks left unobstructed, with their surfaces in a safe and satisfactory condition.
The method of breaking out any concrete to be removed must be approved the Borough Engineer. The dropping of a heavy ball or weight for such purpose will not be permitted.
A.
All trees designated on the plans for removal, as well as any other trees which it shall be necessary to remove for the proper prosecution of the work, shall be removed by the contractor. All other trees shall be carefully fenced and protected from injury. No trimming of trees shall be done except with permission from the Borough Engineer. When such permission is granted, the work shall be done by experienced tree men.
B.
The cost of all tree removal, tree trimming, and any necessary protection of trees shall be deemed included in the price bid per linear foot for the sewer.
