A. 
The purpose of this article is to mandate that all structures within the Borough of Bergenfield that utilize lightweight wood, wood truss, steel truss, composite truss, laminated wood, wood I-beams or any other premanufactured lumber as a method to construct, renovate, or alter any section of an individual structure or dwelling unit be identified with an exterior marking. The pre-incident identification of these buildings will provide fire-suppression crews with critical strategic and tactical information to be utilized during fire-fighting operations and will significantly enhance the safety of fire-suppression personnel operating at emergency incidents.
B. 
This article shall apply to all structures consisting of truss or premanufactured building components not currently regulated for identification within the New Jersey editions of the Uniform Construction Code and the Uniform Fire Code.
A. 
As used in this article, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated below:
ENGINEERED LUMBER
Prefabricated I-joists, truss joists, truss rafters, laminated beams and studs and any other prefabricated materials that fit within this category.
REFLECTIVE SYMBOL
An emblem made of reflective material, designed by the Bergenfield Fire Department and containing lettering identifying the location of any engineered lumber in the structure.
STRUCTURE
A combination of materials to form a construction for occupancy, use or ornamentation, whether installed on, above or below the surface of a parcel of land. This article shall apply to all structures, whether residential, commercial or otherwise, including structures that existed at the time of the effective date of this article.

All definitions in the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code, the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and the International Fire Code shall be the same for this article.
A. 
The Borough Construction Official shall determine if a structure contains engineered lumber.
B. 
All structures containing engineered lumber must have a reflective symbol affixed to the following locations:
(1) 
Primary location: the electrical meter, unless same is inside the structure.
(2) 
Secondary location: the area of the gas meter, unless same is inside the structure.
(3) 
Final location: the garage door.
C. 
The reflective symbol shall be applied by the Construction Official, the Fire Official or other representative and shall be a condition of the issuance of a certificate of occupancy or a certificate of continued occupancy for preexisting structures.
D. 
The Fire Official shall maintain a list of all posted occupancies.
A. 
The reflective symbol shall consist of an emblem made of reflective material, in the shape, form and dimensions as designed by the Bergenfield Fire Department, and will contain lettering identifying the location of any engineered lumber in the structure.
B. 
The reflective symbol shall be supplied and affixed by the Borough at no cost or expense to the owner.
This article shall be enforced by the Construction Official, the Fire Official or the Zoning Officer of the Borough of Bergenfield.
It is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure the integrity of the reflective symbol. In the event that the reflective symbol is removed, damaged or fades over time, it shall be the owner's responsibility to contact the Bergenfield Building Department to have a new reflective symbol installed.
Any person who violates this article by refusing to use the reflective symbol or by removing or tampering with same shall be subject to a fine in an amount of $250 per violation. Each day that a violation continues shall be deemed to be a separate and distinct offense.
