The Police Department of the Borough of Riverside shall consist of a Chief of Police and such other additional police officer or officers as the said Borough Council shall from time to time deem expedient to appoint.
The said Borough Council shall annually, at their first regular meeting in each year, or as soon thereafter as possible, appoint a Chief of Police and such other additional police officer or officers as the Borough Council decides upon and shall then and there fix the stipulated compensation to be paid to such Chief of Police and of such other additional regular police officer or officers, if any be thus appointed, respectively.
It shall be the duty of the Chief of Police and of any and all other regular police officer or officers of the Borough of Riverside to be first duly sworn and, when on active duty, to wear such uniform and other regalia as may be at any time prescribed and required by the Borough Council and to also wear the badge of office required by law.
A. 
It shall be the duty of the said Chief of Police and of any other police officer or officers composing the Police Force of the Borough of Riverside (and, for such purpose, he or they are hereby authorized and empowered) to:
(1) 
See that all ordinances of the said Borough are properly enforced, and that the safety of the people of the said Borough is preserved;
(2) 
Prevent and quell all assaults, riots, tumults, disturbances and other breaches of the peace;
(3) 
Prevent the destruction of public or private property within the limits of said Borough;
(4) 
Arrest and detain any person or persons whom he or they may reasonably suspect of unlawful intention or design until an expeditious hearing can be obtained; and
(5) 
In all other respects, execute and enforce all laws of this commonwealth relating to the security and welfare of the said Borough and of its people.
B. 
It shall be the further duty of the Chief of Police and of any and all other police officer or officers of the said Borough, in addition to the duties respectively prescribed in the foregoing sections of this chapter, and without further compensation whatsoever, except public rewards and mileage, to perform all such other duties as may or shall be imposed upon him or them by any other ordinance or ordinances of the said Borough, now enacted or that may be hereafter enacted, or that may be otherwise required of him or them by the Mayor and to also be at all times subject to the direction and control of the said Mayor.
If the Chief of Police or any other police officer or officers of the Borough of Riverside shall at any time fail to properly demean himself or themselves, any such failure or neglect shall be deemed a proper and sufficient cause for his or their immediate discharge and dismissal by the said Borough Council from the Police Force of the said Borough.
The provisions of this chapter shall take effect immediately after its passage by the said Borough Council; provided, however, that the present police officers shall hold their respective offices until the expiration of the present term thereof, respectively. The offices of the present police officers expire at the first regular meeting of 1959.
