There shall be in the Town of Hempstead an Office of Tourism. The executive officer of such office shall be the Director of Tourism, who shall be appointed by and who shall serve at the pleasure of the Town Board at such salary as may from time to time be fixed by the Town Board. The Director of Tourism shall be appointed on the basis of his or her administrative experience and qualifications for the duties of such office. The Director, under the general supervision of the Town Board, shall be vested with authority and control over the office. The Director, only when specifically authorized to do so by the Town Board, may from time to time employ administrative support personnel, as well as special, technical, fiscal and legal consultants, as may be necessary in the discharge of his or her duties. The Director shall be appointed from either the classified or unclassified rolls of the civil service.
The Office of Tourism shall be vested with the powers and duties of promoting the business of tourism in the Town of Hempstead, including participation in and promulgation and implementation of tourism programs and coordinating such programs with appropriate governmental agencies or private associations, as well as the attraction of meetings and conventions to sites within the Town of Hempstead.
All employees of the Town of Hempstead upon the effective date of this chapter whose duties primarily relate to the promotion of tourism in the Town of Hempstead shall, upon the effective date of the chapter, become employees of the Office of Tourism.
