It shall be the duty of the owners or occupants of any store,
house, or other building, being and fronting on any of the public
streets of said Borough, to number the same, which number shall be
plainly faced upon the front thereof.
[Amended 7-10-1962 by Ord. No. 278; 11-5-1991 by Ord. No. 422]
To regulate the numbering of the stores, houses and other buildings
aforesaid, it is directed that the same shall be numbered as follows:
north and south from Water Street, east and west from Main Street
containing each square 100 numbers and allowing one number to every
25 feet; the even numbers shall be placed upon the west side of the
street running north and south, and the odd numbers shall be placed
upon the east side thereof. The even numbers shall be placed upon
the south side of the street running east and west, and the odd numbers
shall be placed upon the north side thereof. Provided: upon all streets
not running in a generally north-south or east-west direction or in
any way not conforming to the prevalent pattern of street arrangements
in the Borough, numbers shall be assigned by the Borough Secretary-Treasurer,
or by such other official as may be designated by the Council from
time to time, at approximately twenty-five-foot intervals, as closely
as possible to the numbers used upon neighboring streets running in
an approximately parallel direction, or, if the latter is not practicable,
then in the manner that the Engineer or such other official considers
will provide the most logical means of locating the property.
[Added 11-5-1991 by Ord. No. 422]
A. The number(s) shall be placed adjacent to or on the front door, be
at least four inches in height with a minimum stroke width of 0.5
inch, and be of a contrasting color to the background. Where access
is by means of a private road and the building cannot be viewed from
the public way, a monument, pole or other sign or means shall be used
to identify the structure.
B. It shall be unlawful to cover a number with any sign, drapery, or
other obstruction intending to conceal such number and all odd numbers
shall be removed when so directed by the Borough Secretary-Treasurer.
[Amended 7-2-1962 by Ord. No. 278; 11-5-1991 by Ord. No. 422]
The owner or occupant of any store, house or other building
aforesaid, who shall fail or neglect to comply with any of the provisions
of the chapter within 10 days after notice shall be given, shall be
guilty of a violation thereof, and, upon conviction thereof before
any Magisterial District Judge, shall, for each and every such offense,
be sentenced to pay a fine of not less than $1 or more than $300 and
costs of prosecution. Provided: each day's continuance of any
such violation, after the expiration of any such notice, shall constitute
a separate offense.
