[HISTORY: Adopted by the Town Board of the Town of Greenville 8-28-1985 by L.L. No. 2-1985. Amendments noted where applicable.]
The Town Board of the Town of Greenville believes that the health, welfare and public safety of the citizens of the Town of Greenville will be served by a local law prohibiting littering in public places and certain private places.
As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated:
LITTER
Includes, but is not limited to, all articles and materials commonly described as garbage, refuse, rubbish, wastepaper, containers, scrap metal, motor vehicle tires and motor vehicle parts.
PRIVATE RECEPTACLE
A metal, wooden, plastic or other storage container covered so as to prevent litter from being scattered therefrom by animals, the wind or other natural causes.
PUBLIC PLACE
All highways, sidewalks, waterways, including ditches and all public property, including public parks, grounds and buildings.
TOWN BOARD
The Town Board of the Town of Greenville.
A. 
No person shall throw or deposit litter in or upon any public place within the Town of Greenville, except such places as may be designated by the Town of Greenville.
B. 
No person shall throw, deposit or accumulate litter in or upon any private place within the Town of Greenville, other than within a private receptacle, except under such circumstances that such litter cannot be propelled by the wind or other natural cause onto or within any public place or any other private place.[1]

Violation of any of the provisions of this chapter is hereby declared to be an offense against this chapter. For every violation of any provision of this chapter, the person violating the same shall be subject to a fine of not more than $250 or imprisonment for not more than 15 days, or both such fine and imprisonment. The Town Board may also maintain an action or proceeding to compel compliance with or to restrain by injunction the violation of this chapter.
