[Adopted 6-9-1993, effective 7-10-1993 (Ch. 4, Art. XIV, of the 1983 Code)]
A. 
The Woodbridge First Selectman shall nominate one or more Open Burning Officials, and in accordance with state regulations (Section 22a-174-17) these individuals must successfully complete the official training program and complete any other requirements set by the state.
B. 
Any Open Burning Official may be removed at any time by the First Selectman for whatever reason is deemed sufficient following reasonable inquiry into the facts and circumstances justifying removal by the Board of Selectmen.
A. 
Permits for open burning shall be required for all fires except those which are exempt by state regulations.
B. 
Permits for open burning shall not be required for the following fires:
(1) 
Barbecues or other outdoor open fires for cooking food for human consumption;
(2) 
Campfires, bonfires, and other fires for ceremonial or recreational purposes;
(3) 
Fires to abate an immediate fire hazard, provided that the abatement fire is supervised by a responsible fire official;
(4) 
Fires for training firefighters in methods of fighting fires, where only liquid fuels are burned;[1]

(5) 
Fires in salamanders or other similar devices used by construction or other workers for heating purposes, which fires are essential to street installation or paving activities, the repairing of utilities, or other similar work.
C. 
Fires for the prevention, control, or destruction of diseases and pests, and agricultural burning for vegetation management are permitted subject to the conditions outlined below.
D. 
Fires by any resident to dispose of brush on the property where he resides are prohibited.
The Open Burning Official may grant or refuse permission to burn or set such conditions as deemed appropriate, taking into consideration:
A. 
Weather conditions.
B. 
The need for igniting such fire.
C. 
The supervision available. Where no covered metal container is used, any open air fire must be guarded by a person not less than 14 years of age.
D. 
Possible danger of resulting fire damage or personal injury.
Any person violating any provision of this article shall be fined not more than $150.
