[Adopted 8-9-1984 by L.L. No. 5-1984, approved at referendum 11-6-1984]
Pursuant to § 10 of the Municipal Home Rule Law of the State of New York, the Town Board of the Town of Ghent does hereby enact the following article.
The term of office for the Town Supervisor, the Town Clerk and the Town Superintendent of Highways of the Town of Ghent, Columbia County, New York, shall each be changed from two years to four years, commencing at the November 1985 general election, to take effect on January 1, 1986.
That there shall be a mandatory referendum to be held pursuant to the provisions of § 24 of the Municipal Home Rule Law at the next general election on November 6, 1984, at which time this issue shall be placed on the ballot as follows:
"Shall the term of office for the Town Supervisor, Town Clerk and Town Superintendent of Highways for the Town of Ghent each be changed from a two-year term to a four-year term, commencing with the general election in November 1985, effective with the term of office commencing January 1, 1986?"
This article shall be effective following its approval by a majority of the electorate voting on this issue in the general election to be held on November 6, 1984. If a majority of the electorate does not so approve, then this article shall be null and void.[1]
