[Adopted 12-20-1971 as Sec. 13-3
of the Revised General Ordinances]
Sidewalks shall be constructed in accordance
with the specifications contained in this article and shall conform
to lines and grades approved by the Township Engineer.
A.
Materials.
(1)
Cement. Air-entrained Portland cement ASTM Designation
C-175 (Type 111-A) shall be used.
(2)
Aggregates. Fine and coarse aggregates shall conform
to the ASTM specifications for concrete aggregates, Designation C-33.
(3)
Subbase material. Crushed stone or bank-run gravel
shall be used in the preparation of subbase or any other such materials
as may be designated by the Township Engineer.
(4)
Water. The water used in mixing concrete shall be
clean, free of acid, alkali, vegetable or other organic matter.
(5)
Joint filler. The joint filler shall be of nonextruding
joint material conforming to the ASTM specification for performed
expansion joint fillers for concrete, Designation D-544.
B.
Mixing. All concrete shall be mixed in a truck mixer
unless manual mixing or stationary batch mixing is authorized by the
Township Engineer.
C.
Concrete.

(1)
Concrete used for sidewalk construction shall be air-entrained
and shall develop a minimum of 3,500 pounds per square inch. All concrete
which does not have 3,500 pounds per square inch strength at the end
of 28 days as shown on the test to be performed shall be rejected.
Upon notice of the Township Engineer, the property owner shall remove
such rejected concrete and replace it with concrete of approved quality,
all at his own expense.

Dimensions.
(1)
The slabs shall have an area of not more than 64 square
feet. Length of slab shall be equal to the width, and in no case shall
the width be less than four feet.

(2)
Minimum thickness shall be four inches. At driveway
openings to dwellings, the minimum thickness of concrete slab shall
not be less than six inches. The minimum thickness of the concrete
slab at driveway openings to alleys and commercial and industrial
establishments shall be not less than eight inches.
F.
Forms.
(1)
Forms may be of wood or metal and shall be free from
warp and of sufficient strength to resist springing out of shape.
(2)
Forms shall be properly wetted or oiled and free of
foreign matter before depositing any concrete against them.
(3)
The forms shall be well-staked or otherwise held firmly
to the established lines and grades, and their edges shall conform
to the established lines and grade of the walk and shall be so aligned
as to provide a transverse slope toward the street of one foot four
inches per foot.
G.
Joints.
(1)
Construction joints shall be provided to separate
the slabs and shall be cut to a depth equal to at least one-third
of the slab thickness. The edges of the joint shall be rounded.
(2)
A one-half-inch expansion joint filled with joint filler as specified in Subsection A shall be provided at least every 20 feet and between all sidewalks and adjoining backs of curbs and between the intersection of two sidewalks and between all sidewalks and adjoining driveways. Sidewalks in business districts shall be separated from abutting buildings by a similar joint.

H.
Placing and deposition of concrete. Concrete shall be deposited as near as practical to its final position to avoid segregation due to rehandling of flowing. No concrete that has been pay hardened or contaminated by foreign material shall be used. When concreting is once started, it shall be carried on in a continuous operation to the next expansion joint. The concrete shall be spaded and tamped into place in such a manner that the forms are completely filled and free from voids. The use of vibrators for compaction of concrete placed for sidewalks shall be prohibited. Before initial set, exposed surfaces shall be finished as specified in Subsection I.
I.
Finishing.
(1)
After the concrete is placed, it shall be tamped,
screened and finished to provide a true grade and surface without
depressions. The finish shall be made with a wood float, followed
by brushing with a wet, soft hair brush to a neat and workmanlike
surface. The addition of dry cement or aggregates, or both, to the
surface is prohibited.
(2)
All exterior edges shall be neatly rounded with a
one-half-inch radius. All interior edges shall be neatly rounded with
a one-fourth-inch radius.
J.
Protection and curing.
(1)
Concrete shall not be deposited when it appears likely
that the air temperature may fall below 40º during the pouring
or within the following 24 hours unless preparations are made to prevent
any damage to the concrete resulting from the low temperature.
(2)
Concrete shall not be deposited on a frozen foundation
or subgrade.
(3)
As soon as the concrete has hardened sufficiently
to prevent damage, the finished surface shall be sprinkled with water
or covered with sand or earth or other suitable material, and in any
case kept wet for at least three days. A chemical curing agent applied
in strict accordance with the manufacturer's specifications may be
authorized by the Township Engineer.
K.
Setback. The near edge of the sidewalk shall be five
feet six inches from the face of the curb.
