The mission of the Environmental Sustainability Committee is to guide
the Town of Indian Head to become an environmentally sustainable "green
town" through a process that involves resource conservation, preventing
ecological harm, developing and using renewable resources and encouraging
self-sufficient practices. The Environmental Sustainability Committee
shall recommend programs and policies and undertake actions that will
engage residents and businesses in the creation of a sustainable town.
The Environmental Sustainability Committee consists of eight regular
members and one member of the Indian Head Town Council who shall serve
ex officio and shall not have a vote. The eight regular members shall
be residents of the Town of Indian Head, except that the Town Council
may designate one of those eight membership positions for a nonresident
representative of the Indian Head business community.

The Town Council shall appoint the members of the Committee. Members
of the Committee shall serve for terms of three years each, or until
their successors are appointed and take office, except that the Town
Council member of the Committee shall serve an indeterminate term
unless a fixed term is established by the Town Council at the time
of appointment. The term of the Town Council member of the Committee
shall end when the Council member leaves office.
The Committee shall have a Chair appointed by the Town Council. The
term of office of the Chair shall be one year or until the Chair's
successor is appointed and takes office. The Chair may be reappointed
to serve successive terms as Chair. The Committee may have and select
such other officers as the Committee decides.
The Environmental Sustainability Committee has the powers and duties
set forth in this section. The Committee may undertake other functions
and activities as the Committee reasonably determines consistent with
its mission.
The Committee shall act as an advocate for protecting, preserving
and enhancing the environment as it relates to issues under consideration
by the Town Council and Town Planning Commission.
The Committee shall serve in an advisory role to the Town Council
and all Town boards and commissions on environmental and sustainability
policy issues. The Committee may recommend new ordinances, amendments
to existing ordinances and other actions it deems appropriate. The
Committee may also recommend expenditures in connection with existing
and proposed environmental programs.
The Committee shall prepare and present to the Town Council by December
31 each year, commencing in 2016, an annual report that includes,
but is not limited to, the following:
Recommendations for proposed Town policies and programs that support
the preservation, protection and enhancement of the Town's environment
and sustainability.
