All requests for honorary recognition of individuals shall be determined by the City Council by resolution.
All requests for recognition under this chapter must be submitted in the form requested to the Department of Public Works. To be considered complete for processing, all requests by said Department must be complied with.
The applicant must meet the following criteria to be considered for recognition under this chapter. They must be a citizen of the United States. They must either be deceased or over 80 years old. They must have made a significant contribution to the historical, political, cultural, educational, artistic, athletic or economic fabric of the City of East Orange, the State of New Jersey or the United States of America.
The Council shall determine upon recommendation of the Director of Public Works whether recognition is warranted. It will also determine what the type of public acknowledgement should be. It may choose a ceremonial street naming on a particular street, designate a marking in a public area or declare by resolution a specific day acknowledging their achievements.
