As used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the
meanings indicated:
Any person who operates fire apparatus and devotes his or
her normal working hours to operating any piece of fire apparatus
or other services directly connected with fire protection work, and
when not actually operating firefighting equipment, receives fire
and police calls in the capacity as deskman at the Municipal Building,
under the supervision of the Mayor, and who is paid a stated salary
for such work.
A police force organized and operating as prescribed by law,
the members of which devote their normal working hours to police duty
or duty and service connected with police protection work, and who
are paid a stated salary or compensation for such work by the Borough.
Each and every appointment and promotion as a policeman or fire
apparatus operator in the Borough shall be made only according to
qualifications and fitness to be ascertained by examination, which
shall be competitive, as provided in this chapter.
No person shall be suspended, removed or reduced in rank as
a policeman or paid operator of fire apparatus of the Borough, except
in accordance with the provisions of this chapter.
